This is the most scenic and commonly recommended route.

• Characteristics: You’ll drive along the coast to Matara, then turn inland through the hills past Tangalle and Wellawaya. The road then climbs dramatically through Ella and Bandarawela before reaching Nuwara Eliya. The roads are winding and can be slow.
• Travel Time: 4 – 5 hours under good conditions.

Alternative Route: Via Expressways (A2 -> Southern Expwy -> Outer Circular -> A7)

• Characteristics: Faster highways initially, but still involves a long, slow climb on the A7 from Kandy towards Nuwara Eliya. This route misses the stunning Ella region but can be more predictable time-wise.
• Travel Time: 4.5 – 5.5 hours.

Why the via-Ella route is preferred? It is incredibly scenic and allows for fantastic stops along the way.

Important Note: There are no direct expressways to Nuwara Eliya. The final ascent is always on winding mountain roads, which is why the journey takes significantly longer than the distance suggests.
